Sex therapy for when sex and intimacy have become hard
Desire that has quietly faded. A mismatch in what each of you wants. Difficulties with arousal, or the body not responding the way it used to. Pain, avoidance, or a distance that has grown where closeness used to be.
Confidential psychosexual and relationship therapy for adults and couples across the UK. It is a talking therapy. No examinations, no judgement, and nothing you have to be embarrassed to say.
What is trauma therapy, and how does it help?
Sex therapy, or psychosexual therapy, is a regular, confidential conversation with a therapist trained to talk about sex without awkwardness. It is a talking therapy. There are no examinations, no demonstrations and no physical contact of any kind. It is space to understand what has changed and why, and to find a way back.
Most people arrive carrying two things: the difficulty itself, and what they have quietly decided it says about them. That something is wrong with them. That they are letting someone down. That everyone else finds this easy. We work on both, because the second one is usually what keeps the first one stuck.
Sessions are online, fifty minutes, the same time each week. You are fully dressed, the camera shows your face, and it is the same kind of conversation you would have in any other therapy. The subject is different. The format is not. For a lot of people, being able to have this conversation at home, with no waiting room and nobody to walk past afterwards, is what makes it possible at all.
-
It is talking therapy, nothing physical. No examinations, no demonstrations, no touch. Nothing happens on camera. Where the work involves anything you practise between sessions, it is private, it is yours to decide on, and nothing is ever reported back in detail you would rather not give.
-
You can come alone, or together. Plenty of people start on their own, whether they are single or their partner would rather not attend. Couples are welcome together. You can begin alone and bring a partner in later if that turns out to be right.
-
Nothing you bring will be new to the room. Your therapist does this every day. Whatever it is, they have heard it before, and they will not be embarrassed, which makes it a great deal easier not to be either.
-
All identities and relationships. LGBTQ+ affirming, and open to every kind of relationship structure. You will not have to explain or justify who you are or how you love before the real work can start.
-
Alongside your GP, where the body is involved. Where there may be a physical or medical cause, we work alongside your GP rather than instead of them. We do not diagnose or prescribe, and for anything physical the two together usually give the best result.
What sex and relationship therapy can help with
Most sexual difficulties sit where body, mind and relationship meet. Therapy is where those threads get gently untangled.
-
Desire and mismatched libido
Understanding what has changed, easing the pressure, and finding a way through differences in wanting without either of you feeling rejected.
-
Performance anxiety
The worry that feeds the very difficulty you are dreading. Working with the loop between anxiety and the body's response.
-
Arousal and erectile difficulties
The psychological side of arousal and erections, worked with alongside your GP where a physical cause may be involved.
-
Pain and tensing
The emotional side of painful or difficult sex, including vaginismus and ongoing discomfort, worked with gently and in step with medical care.
-
Closeness and communication
Learning to talk about sex without it becoming a row, and finding your way back to each other after things have drifted. Often this overlaps with couples counselling.
-
Sex after trauma, illness or change
Reconnecting with intimacy after trauma, surgery, childbirth, menopause or medication, at a pace that feels safe.
Whatever you are bringing, you are almost certainly not the only one, and it is almost certainly more workable than it feels right now.
What this can sound like
You do not need the right words, or a diagnosis, to start. If any of this sounds like you, or like the two of you, there is something here to work with.
- We love each other, but we have not touched in months.
- I do not want it as often as they do, and I feel guilty about it.
- My body will not do what I want it to.
- I am dreading it before it has even started.
- It hurts, so I have started avoiding it altogether.
- We cannot talk about it without it turning into a row.
- Things changed after the baby, the illness, the menopause.
- I do not know how to say any of this out loud.

Frequently asked questions about trauma therapy
Is sex therapy physical? Are there any examinations?
No. Psychosexual therapy is a confidential talking therapy. There are no examinations, no demonstrations and no physical contact of any kind. Sessions are conversations, held online in your own private space, and you are fully dressed throughout.
Can I come on my own, or do I need a partner?
Either works. Plenty of people come on their own, whether they are single or their partner would rather not attend. Couples are welcome together. We will work out what suits you at the assessment, and you can start alone and bring a partner in later if that turns out to be right.
Is it inclusive of LGBTQ+ people and non-traditional relationships?
Yes, fully. Our therapists are affirming of all sexual orientations, gender identities and relationship structures. You will not have to explain or defend who you are before the work can begin.
Should I see my GP as well?
If there is pain, or a change in how your body responds, it is worth having your GP rule out or treat any physical cause. We are glad to work alongside medical care. We do not diagnose or prescribe, and for anything physical the two together usually give the best result.
Is it confidential?
Yes. What you bring stays within our professional and ethical framework. The usual limits that apply to all therapy, such as a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, are explained at the start. For many people, this confidentiality is exactly what makes it possible to talk about this at all.
What if I am worried about being judged?
Almost everyone is, and it is usually unfounded. Therapists who work in this field meet the full range of what people bring, and very little is new to them. You are not going to shock anyone, and you will not be told what you should want.
How much does sex therapy cost, and is there a waiting list?
A one-hour assessment is £50. Individual sessions are £50 with a supervised trainee counsellor, or £125 with a fully qualified therapist. Couples sessions are priced at your assessment, and we will tell you exactly what it costs before you commit. There is no waiting list, and most people begin weekly sessions within a week of their assessment.
You do not have to explain much, or have it worked out. Send us a message and a person will read it and write back within one working day. No obligation, and no pressure to book anything.
