What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are characterised by an unhealthy relationship with food, leading individuals to change their eating habits and behaviour.

If you're experiencing an eating disorder, you could discover that you're excessively preoccupied with your weight, making unwise food choices, engaging in excessive exercise, or resorting to other methods, such as purging, to manage your weight.

  • Societal Pressure: Society often promotes unrealistic beauty standards through media and social platforms, leading to body dissatisfaction and a desire to conform.
  • Psychological Challenges: Underlying issues like low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, or past trauma can play a significant role in triggering and sustaining disordered eating patterns.
  • Coping Mechanisms: Some turn to disordered eating as a way to cope with emotional distress, seeking control or numbing emotional pain.
